Email - Quarantine Questions

  1. Why do emails get sent to Quarantine?
    • Policy: The message matched the conditions of a mail flow rule (also known as a transport rule).
    • Bulk: Multiple emails being received at the same time with either the same sender or subject.
    • Phish: Emails that ask for personal information.
    • Malware: An email with an attachment that may install malware if open or downloaded.
    • Spam: Unsolicited email.
    • High Confidence Phish: Emails that copy another email address. Also known as spoofing emails

  2. What's the difference between a quarantined message and a message sent to my Junk folder, in Outlook?
    • Office 365 Mail includes two filters to protect you from potentially dangerous emails: quarantine and junk mail. The quarantine filter isolates emails suspected of containing a virus, before it reaches your inbox, and holds them in quarantine on the mail server. The junk mail filter isolates suspected junk mail, after it reaches your inbox, and holds them in a folder in your Inbox.

  3. I released my message from Quarantine but still don't see it in my Inbox.
    • The email may have gotten caught in the 2nd filter, after it was released, and may be in your Junk folder. If after a few minutes you still do not see your email in your Inbox or Junk folders, you can go back to the Quarantined email and release again. You can do this as many times as needed until the message expires.

  4. How long do Quarantine emails stay in Quarantine?
    • Quarantine emails will appear for 29 days. After that the email will disappear and no longer be listed.
