Using Natural Reader with LockDown Browser for Test Accommodations

Natural Reader can provide read-aloud support for students with test accommodations. When using LockDown Browser, instructors need to allow access to the Natural Reader website and provide a link within the quiz instructions.

Adjust LockDown Browser Settings for the Assessment

  1. In Canvas, open LockDown Browser from the course navigation.

  2. Locate the assessment and select Settings in the LockDown Browser dashboard.

  3. Click Advanced Settings.

  4. Check Allow access to specific external web domains.

  5. In the text box, enter: naturalreaders.com

  1. Select Save + Close.

Add Instructions for Students

Students will need to open Natural Reader during their exam to have questions read aloud. Be sure to include the site link so they can access it directly from the quiz instructions.

  1. Edit the quiz Instructions in Canvas.

  2. Add a direct link to the Natural Reader online tool:

  3. Use full URLs (not hyperlinks only) so the site opens in a new tab within LockDown Browser.

Student Use

Students should be familiar with the site, but they will copy text from the test and paste into the Natural Reader tab in order to have the question read.
