Authenticator FIDO 2 USB Key Setup

You have the option to add a FIDO 2 USB key to your Microsoft Account to use as an authentication method. This can be in addition to your phone, or as an alternative if you do not have a phone.

If you do not have a phone, the Service Desk will need to generate a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) for you to be able to log in and register your USB key. Please call 715-830-5555 to have this created. Please note, the TAP is only good for a one time use, for 7 days, so please ensure you are ready to set up your USB key before logging in with your TAP.

Once you have a TAP, or if you've already set up a phone and are adding an additonal device, follow the steps below:

1. Log in to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/ with you CVTC email address and password. You will be prompted to enter your TAP.

2. Select “Security Info”

3. Choose “Add Method” then select “Security key” from the drop down menu (it may have you use an alternative method to verify when setting this up), then select USB device.

4. Plug the USB key into the computer

 5. Choose Security key again from this list. It will then prompt you through a few pop up notifications and then have you set up a 6 digit PIN. The user will need to remember this PIN every time they use the device. When it asks you to touch the key, push the button on the USB key. Then input a name when prompted.

6. You’re all set!
