Syncing files from Teams to Windows Explorer

This document describes the process to be able to have direct access to files stored in Teams on your Windows computer. This process is called ‘syncing’. Synced files can be edited and deleted from your local PC in Windows Explorer (or Finder on a Mac) and the changes will be reflected in the Online version. Also, changes in the online version will be reflected in your synced file folder on your PC or your Mac.

Microsoft Teams: Tips and Tricks

For a Windows computer:

  1. In Microsoft Teams select the General section of a Team, go to the Files section and choose Open in SharePoint
Open a Microsoft Teams area in SharePoint Online
  2. This will take you to a website. Select Sync.

  3. It may prompt you to Open in Microsoft OneDrive, tell it to open. This may look different depending on what you have selected as your default web browser.
Select 'Sync' from the menu bar

When it is finished, if you look in Windows File Explorer, you should see the new Teams Channel under the ‘Chippewa Valley Technical College’ name. Notice this is separate from your personal OneDrive for Business folder.
The new file folder appears under the Chippewa Valley Technical College One Drive for Business area of Explorer

Please note: The time it takes to sync files depends on the size and quantity of them. Syncing very large folders is not recommended, but if you would like to, please contact IT.
